Pre-Season Update 2024!

Hey folks,
Hope everyone is having a great winter and keeping in good health.  Coming off a hot and very dry 2023 we are thankful to see some rainy days this winter and take some time to plan out 2024.

What's our season looking like?

Fresh Faces on the Farm

We have selected a full-season intern to join me at the farm this coming season.  He is from Tennessee and hopes to develop his own acres back in Tennessee one day and will join us to learn our ways!  We look forward to welcoming Gideon to the farm in April.

We also have a 3 month stay helper coming from Greece with an agronomy background in plant breeding.  We are thrilled to welcome Theano as well.

Garden Starts For Sale

We are in the process of adding more nursery space to the farm to hopefully add to spring sales while we wait on summer’s abundance.  We hope to start offering starts of the same varieties that we grow in the field for those of you that have gardens at home.  This may also expand into perennial, shrubs, and trees, stone fruits once the space is set up!

Big plans in the garden!

Blueberries!

This spring we will be adding 400 row feet of blueberry plants with staggered maturation times!  With quality care we hope to see these blueberries thrive on the farm.

Fig Trees Headed to the Field!

We will plant around 20 varieties of figs out to the back garden hugging the north backing tree line.  Hopefully they will be snug in their new home and have a fat enough trunk diameter to survive our lowest temps next winter will bring.  All the cuttings resting on the pots will be rooted out or up for grabs on the store as cutting wood.

Experiments with compostable biodegradable mulch

Farming is tough enough to be profitable without having core beliefs in how to raise our food in a healthy manner.  We are always listening to our customers and keeping an eye out for developments in technology when they can align with our goals for land stewardship and produce quality.

We have been against the use of single-use plastic and biodegradeable plastic due to the probable contamination in the soil and in the fruits being sold.  Also the amount of plastic thrown away just to produce food was quite unappealing.

We think we found a solution that we hope to trial this season that will hopefully cut down our overall time spent per row on crops that we don’t direct seed.  This new material is termed compostable biodegradable film.  We found a used plastic mulch layer as seen in the photo below to efficiently lay our rows in the field.  This new biodegradable film is third-party tested and has a timed rate of composting with the micro life in the soil.  The third party testers are many of the same ones that tested the bio-bags that we switched to last season for produce.  Unlike previous biodegradable films that were creating more issues in the soil that traditional plastic, we are confident to trial this brand and see how it goes!  To read more about this film here is their company website.
