First Outdoor Harvests of the Year!

First Outdoor Harvests of the Year!

Hey Folks,

Hope everybody is doing great and having a great spring!

What's happening on the farm?

Planting

The past few weeks have been quite busy on the farm, ensuring everything is on track for a successful year! We planted 400 row feet of blueberries yesterday! We will observe how each variety performs here in Louisa and planted another 15 cuttings from our bush that we have been selling berries from over the years.

Next on our list is planting the flower beds, followed by peppers and eggplants.

Our first planting of arugula didn’t germinate well this year, so we hope to try again with a fresh pack of seeds and aim for a later crop on our spring beds.

Projects

Fencing

Our fencing endeavor is underway! The area is delineated, and we’re seeking an opportune moment to drive in the posts and proceed with opening up new grazing pastures!  The rain in the forecast for the weekend seems like a great opportunity.

Meanwhile, the sheep have commenced their lambing season, albeit a tad later than usual for our farm, and both our cows have successfully delivered a heifer calf each this spring!

What's new in stock and whats to come?

Next week we will start harvesting from our spring roots and greens plot including french breakfast radishes, round radishes and spinach.  From the greenhouse will we harvest the first beets, cilantro and lettuce mix!

We are about a month away from the first pull of honey.  Both the bees and beekeeper are working hard to re-establish the bee yard after 65% of our bee hives over winter.  But we have some very healthy hives with great potential for big flows of honey!
