We are approaching the beginning of our production season with quite a pleasant drop in temperatures. The abundant rains have treated our spring crops well as they catch up to where they were last year. What a stark contrast from a spring with no rain to one with plenty.
Gideon enjoyed community and time shared with friends over great snacks and great farm meals!
Theano loved spending her evenings observing the sheep and recording photographs of their nighttime cuddles and play time. (Most of the photos are from her lense in the email!)
Our 16+ fig tree varieties took well to transplanting and we only lost 1 tree from what was planted. It seems like they were meant to thrive on this N backing tree line and we will see what the future holds for fig production. In-between the fig trees is where we planted lots of herbs, as mentioned in the email last week!
Our blueberries seems to be taking well to the field conditions provided. We were a bit disappointed with the quality of the bushes received as they arrived with no foliage. But slowly they seem to be leafing out.
Fresh/Green garlic is coming out of the high tunnel this coming week! We will have a big high tunnel harvest and planting as we harvest overwinter onions Friday and plant our last row of high tunnel tomatoes, and first row of cucumbers. Next week we will clean up the beet and cilantro row with a final harvest and begin transplanting our baby ginger!
We actually decided to offer pre-sprouted baby ginger plants this year for y’all to try at home. The variety is Peruvian Yellow Ginger and we have been sprouting them in the basement in a heated room since mid February. Baby ginger is a heavy feeder that doesn’t like to be in waterlogged conditions but does well with drip irrigation or a mister system for frequent shallow waterings. Some growers opt to grow baby ginger in pots to allow better drainage.
